An exceptional pair of mid-18th century English George III giltwood pier mirrors, circa 1755, in the manner of celebrated London cabinetmakers and designers William and John Linnell.
Each mirror features a dramatic carved eagle crest with outstretched wings perched above an architectural and rocaille-carved frame. Elaborate floral and foliate carving trails along the sides, while scrolling ornament and pierced decoration create the wonderfully exuberant silhouette characteristic of the finest English Rococo design.
The mirrors relate closely to a documented Design for a Pier Glass illustrated in Helena Hayward and Pat Kirkham's authoritative reference, William and John Linnell, pp. 96–97, figs. 184–185.
Their aged gilding and surviving surface contribute to the depth and character expected of 18th-century giltwood.
A rare opportunity to acquire a true pair of highly decorative George III mirrors with a strong connection to one of the most important English furniture-making families of the period.
