Attributed to the early 20th century (circa 1910s–1930s), this monumental 7-foot architectural palace door (Ilekun Afin) is a museum-caliber masterwork from the Yoruba kingdom of Southwestern Nigeria. Carved in deep, dramatic high relief from a massive monolithic slab of dense indigenous hardwood, the door exemplifies the celebrated figurative school of master carvers such as Olowe of Ise and Dada Areogun. The face is organized into multiple stacked narrative registers chronicling courtly regalia and historical encounters. Upper tiers depict an equestrian warlord (Oba / Eleshin) on horseback flanked by armed royal retainers, followed by courtly wives in elaborate shuku coiffures carrying ceremonial vessels. Most remarkably, the middle register features a historic colonial officer in a sun helmet riding a spoked-wheel bicycle flanked by court fan-bearers—a celebrated iconographic marker commemorating the early 20th-century transition and dialogue between Yoruba royalty and Western contact.
Carved with deep undercut shadows, expressive bulging almond eyes, and refined geometric borders, the timber displays an extraordinary warm tobacco and dark espresso hand-rubbed patina. Standing an impressive 84 inches (7 feet) tall, its museum-grade narrative complexity and monumental scale make it an exceptional collector-grade centerpiece for luxury estates, high-ceiling architectural entryways, and premier international collections.
