Rare working olive oil separator from the Alentejo, Portugal, hand-formed in brass by Florencio Pires of Ponte de Sor. Stamped 26 on the fill lid.
The double-spout mechanism separates oil from water. Simple, ingenious, effective.
Named maker's plate riveted to the body, forming the handle bracket. Original patina washed and waxed. Small dings, scratches, and weld splatter are from original fabrication or working repairs — evidence of hand craftsmanship and use, not damage.
This brass separator was an essential tool for a family's olive business in Alentejo region, sometime in the 1920s-1950s, it is now retired for a more comfortable existence as a bright conversation piece in a Mediterranean-styled kitchen.
17 inches high to lid. 11 inch diameter tank. 13 inches spout to brass handle. 20 inches including swinging brass handle with wood grip. Approximately 5 pounds. Can be displayed hanging.
