These figurines date back as far … Read more Circa 1940s/50s Americana painted chalkware collie dog figurine in off-white with blue bow decoration.
These figurines date back as far as the 1800s and were often used as carnival prizes.
Chalkware is composed of plaster of Paris or sculpted gypsum that is unfired, unlike a glaze, so its colors are exposed (usually hand-painted watercolors), and the coatings offer little protection. Hence, these pieces are easy chipped / broken, given the fragile quality of materials. Wear is accepted and expected with pieces of this material.
In this case, there is an old repair to the ear, which has been reattached along with some crazing, paint losses, scuffs, and natural patina.
Charming work of chalkware art with lovely pops of color and nice, whimsical representation.
