This piece (among others) was donated to Alderhouse Residential Communities of Middletown, CT by J.H. Whitney and Company of New Canaan, CT in 1998. Alderhouse ceased operation in 2010 and the piece was given to its Executive Director, Christopher Widmer where it has remained since.
I'm not positive of its origin however, it may have come to J.H. Whitney's CEO Michael Brooks through Sotheby's whose wife, Diane Brooks, was the CEO. The words "Colwell Malvern - David A. Thursfield" are written in chalk on the back and there are no other markings. A quick Google search reveals there is a small village called Colwell near Malvern, UK and the name Thursfield is prevalent in the area. It would be logical to assume that this piece belonged to David A. Thursfield of Colwell, UK and somehow ended up at Sotheby's in New York City.
The piece is amazingly solid and has been in our library for over 15 years.
