This antique cabinet from Italy, a handsome and restrained example of provincial Neoclassical cabinetry, has a rectangular top with softly chamfered and rounded front corners. The case below houses a pair of raised panel doors framed with molded surrounds, and decorated with four carved rosette blocks placed at the corners of the recessed panels. Fluted front side posts define the cabinet's ends, flanking the doors, lending a sense of symmetry and classical proportion. The case sides each have a raised panel design. A carved s-scroll (or wave-pattern) frieze runs along the lower apron, adding visual interest without overwhelming the piece's otherwise restrained design. The cabinet is raised on a molded plinth base that grounds the credenza with a solid, substantial presence. The walnut displays a beautiful grain pattern and a light wear and patina (with signs of early repairs and early bug damage) consistent with the centuries old age. This early 19th century Italian credenza, with rich walnut and architectural detailing, make it well suited for use as a sideboard, media cabinet, or statement piece, appropriate for both traditional and contemporary interiors.
