Sculpture by Jesus Rafael Soto (1923-2005)
This luminescent block of Plexiglass (or Poly Carobnnate?) and metal was one of a group of pieces by Jesus Soto, in varied media, acquired by a New York based interior and fashion designer who knew Soto in Paris in the 1970’s. They were displayed at her apartment in NYC until her death in the late 90’s. This is one of several that we acquired when she was alive. It has been in our Mid-Century Modern collection ever since.
Jesus Soto was born in Venezuela and is known as an early developer of Kinetic Art and Op Art. After his early training in Venezuela he moved to Paris where he was part of a group of artists, such as Tinguely and Vasarely, who were experimenting with new forms of visual experiences - redefining the very concept of “art.” He was a prolific artist, creating works large and small in a variety of media and experimenting with new synthetic materials and combinations of materials that could create illusions of depth and movement.
Soto's works are in the Cisneros Collection at New York’s MOMA, the Centre Pompidou, the Tate Gallery, the Galeria Nazionale D’art Moderna in Italy, El Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Hirschhorn Museum in Washington and numerous other museums in Europe, Latin America, and the US. Some are small pieces such as this one, wall pieces with moving parts, three dimensional pieces in all sizes, and large outdoor installations.
This seemingly simple but stunning piece is a rectangular box with metal constructs inside that create changing visual patterns. The box comes alive depending on the light, the perspective and the movement of the viewer. It reflects Soto's ability to create works that combine the utmost simplicity with structural complexity.
