A superb signed original wood engraving entitled The Road Home by important American printmaker Asa Cheffetz (1896–1965), retaining its original Associated American Artists gallery documentation.
Created circa 1948, this beautifully rendered New England landscape depicts a winding rural road disappearing toward a distant farmhouse beneath a succession of wooded mountains.
Cheffetz's extraordinary control of the engraving medium is particularly evident here. Fine networks of individually engraved lines describe rolling fields, distant foliage, architecture and changing atmospheric light, creating remarkable depth despite the work's intimate scale and monochromatic palette.
The Road Home was published in a limited edition of 250 by Associated American Artists of New York, one of the most influential American print publishers of the twentieth century.
This impression is signed by Asa Cheffetz in pencil at the lower right and is accompanied by its surviving period label identifying the work as:
“THE ROAD HOME — A LIMITED EDITION — Signed Original Wood-Engraving — By ASA CHEFFETZ.”
The reverse additionally retains the original Associated American Artists Galleries label listing its New York, Chicago and Beverly Hills galleries—an especially appealing element of provenance that remains with the work.
Another impression of The Road Home resides in the collection of the Delaware Art Museum.
Presented beneath glass in a period frame with a wide warm-neutral mat, the work possesses exactly the understated quality that makes early American prints so compelling in contemporary interiors.
A particularly desirable Cheffetz example combining documented title, limited edition, artist signature, original publisher provenance and period presentation.
