An evocative original wood engraving by celebrated American printmaker Asa Cheffetz (1896–1965), depicting a covered bridge nestled into the rugged landscape of rural New England.
Created circa 1945, Covered Bridge – Vermont exemplifies Cheffetz's extraordinary command of the wood-engraving medium. Working almost entirely through intricate passages of black and white, the artist renders the rocky streambed, densely wooded hills and weathered covered bridge with remarkable depth and atmosphere.
The work is identified in the Cheffetz catalogue as Springfield 75 and was issued through Associated American Artists, the influential New York organization instrumental in bringing original works by leading American printmakers to a broader collecting audience during the twentieth century.
The impression is signed by Asa Cheffetz in pencil at the lower right and remains beautifully presented beneath glass in a traditional wood frame with a generously proportioned neutral mat.
Cheffetz's engravings are held in major American institutional collections, and his rural New England subjects remain particularly admired for their exceptional detail, tonal sophistication and quiet sense of place.
A wonderful example of American Regionalist printmaking and an exceptionally versatile piece for a traditional, Americana, New England, rustic-modern or collected interior.
