Niobe, a figure of mythology who was destroyed by the gods, and the image represents a sight of great sorrow. The legend is quite fantastic; the bronze of Niobe is a mid-19th century cast.
This sculpture is the product of an engineer named James Watt (1736-1819), who designed an apparatus to enlarge or reduce sculptures. They are now in the museum of science along with the Niobe model. This Niobe was from his workshop, used to perfect this mechanical feat. This is the source of its 18th-century form. This fine bronze is mounted on black marble, which measures 4" by 4" and 7.5" tall. This is a mid-19th-century bronze.
