Unlike the cast-metal traditions of Eastern Europe, North African Judaica is celebrated for its use of hand-hammered sheet brass and intricate repoussé work—a tradition often carried out by Jewish metalworkers in the "Mellahs" (Jewish quarters) of cities like Fez or Marrakesh. Reverse view highlights the authentic hand-hammered repoussé work. Note the clear indentations mirroring the Star of David and floral motifs, confirming the piece was hand-wrought from a single heavy-gauge brass sheet.

The "story" of this piece lies in its synthesis of cultures. The triangular backplate features dense, organic floral scrollwork that echoes Islamic architectural motifs, yet it is centered by a prominent, hand-chased Star of David. This specific style of "bench lamp" was designed to be either hung on a wall near a doorway or stood on a flat surface, with the eight pinched oil fonts intended to hold hand-spun cotton wicks and olive oil, adhering to the most traditional method of lighting.

For the collector, this piece represents more than a ritual object; it is a testament to the Sephardic diaspora's artistic resilience. The heavy gauge of the metal and the deep, honey-toned patina suggest this was a family heirloom of status, surviving over 150 years of ritual use.
