This is a handsome and substantial vintage Chinese carved wooden box, likely crafted from dense, dark hardwood (resembling Zitan or Rosewood) with a beautiful, rich, natural grain visible across the surface.
The lid features exquisite relief carving. In the center sits a large, stylized Chinese character "Fu" (福), which translates to "Good Fortune" or "Blessing." It is surrounded by a rectangular border containing numerous smaller characters, also meaning blessings, arranged in a traditional grid—representing the "Hundred Blessings" (Baifu) motif, a classic symbol of longevity and prosperity.
The front of the box is fitted with a classic, tarnished brass latch featuring a decorative lock plate, adding an authentic antique touch. The box's interior is clean and spacious, making it highly functional for storing jewelry, keepsakes, tea accessories, or small collectibles.
