This door is a study in engineering as much as craft. Hand-hewn from a single, dense hardwood trunk, the panel and its projecting upper hinge lug and lower pivot corner were carved as one continuous piece — not built up from separate parts or fitted with applied metal hardware, but shaped entirely from the same log. This integrated lug-and-pivot system, sometimes called a Sahelian hinge, was engineered across two related regions: the Bandiagara Escarpment of Mali, home to the Dogon, and the Voltaic lands of Burkina Faso associated with the Bwa and Gurunsi. The design let a heavy wooden door swing directly within sockets carved into a mud-brick granary wall, without nails, hinges, or hardware of any kind.
Rather than carved pattern, the surface carries the rhythmic, shallow facets of adze work — the tool marks of the hand-hoe used to shape the plank, left visible rather than smoothed away. The wood's deep, uneven patina and degree of surface wear point toward a considerably early date, possibly into the 19th century. Mounted on its custom stand, this door reads as raw, sculptural form — a piece for a space that wants texture and history over ornament.
