An exceptional and highly unique pair of antique Japanese Kutani porcelain mantle vases dating to the Meiji period (1868–1912). This stunning matched set features a rare, beautifully rendered portrait of a long-haired dog (resembling a St. Bernard or Spaniel) framed by trailing green and black leaves, vibrant red berries, and delicate gilt (gold leaf) hand-painted highlights.
The vases are anchored by a distinctive rich iron-red (benji) band at the flared base and a matching rolled collar at the rim, iconic to traditional Kutani artistry. The detailed portrait work reflects the fascinating cross-cultural, Western-influenced "Export" style popularized during the Meiji era, combining classic Japanese porcelain craftsmanship with European-inspired canine subject matter.
