The interior panels are gilded gold and hand-painted with a nature scene: bamboo stalks, blossoming branches, lotus flowers and broad leaves, flowering peonies, perforated garden rocks, small birds, and a butterfly in flight. On the reverse side, black lacquered with gilt and muted polychrome decorations of sparse gilt clusters of bamboo fronds scattered across a dark background framed by a fine geometric border with small floral accents in dusty rose and grey flowering vines and morning-glory blossoms with a pair of small fluttering butterflies. No maker’s mark.
