Dating to the late 1960s, this hand-thrown stoneware vase comes from the era when Keyes headed the ceramics department as a Professor of Art at Pacific Lutheran University (PLU) in Tacoma, Washington. This piece beautifully captures the rustic, nature-inspired minimalism of the early mid-century Northwest studio pottery movement before Keyes transitioned into his famous "Northwest Funk" face vessels of the 1970s and 80s. This vase is about 9.5 inches tall and 7 inches wide.

Design & Features:

Form: Expertly hand-thrown with visible throwing rings, featuring a striking, asymmetrical hand-folded rim that creates a unique architectural profile.

Surface Design: Crafted from heavy, speckled earthy brown stoneware with an unglazed exterior texture. It is decorated with bold, minimalist, freeform abstract brushstrokes in a dark iron/cobalt slip.

Signature: Heavily incised by hand on the unglazed base with the artist's distinctive stylized cursive signature: "Keyes", complete with his characteristic sweeping underline loop.
