Ten matching examples are available. These remarkable fixtures were formerly installed in the main entrance area of the historic church, where their extraordinary golden illumination welcomed visitors as they entered. The provenance is particularly noteworthy. The hauptkirche beatae mariae virginis is one of wolfenbüttel’s most historically significant monuments and is closely connected with the city’s history as a former ducal residence. Beneath the high choir lies the historic welf crypt (welfengruft), the princely burial place associated with generations of the house of welf. The crypt contains 29 historic burials and represents an important monument to the history of the former duchy of brunswick-wolfenbüttel. Against this historic background, the original placement of these lights at the church’s principal entrance is especially compelling. Their sophisticated reflector construction creates an almost cascading field of warm golden illumination—a shower of golden light that would have greeted worshippers and visitors immediately upon entering the church. The quality of construction is exceptional. The substantial metal body displays a naturally developed deep bronze-brown patina. Its precise alloy has not been scientifically analyzed; based on its weight, appearance, construction and surface characteristics, it appears to be brass or potentially a bronze-rich copper alloy. Different elements may employ different copper alloys, accounting for the beautiful variations between the darker exterior and the warmer golden interior components. At the center is a large silver-toned hammered metal reflector, engineered to capture and redistribute the light. In front of it sits an extraordinary sculptural system of concentric brass-toned cylindrical baffles carried by three radial supports. This construction shields the bulb from direct view while directing the reflected light downward. The result is remarkable: rather than the harsh illumination often associated with ceiling fixtures, the light seems to pour from the interior in a rich golden cascade. Unlit, the fixture has a restrained, almost brutalist architectural presence; illuminated, its interior transforms into an intensely warm field of gold. Its compact dimensions also make the design exceptionally versatile. A single example is ideal for an entrance, smaller stairwell, dressing room or intimate interior. Installed in pairs or repeated sequentially, the fixtures can create an impressive architectural rhythm along a staircase, long hallway, gallery, hotel or restaurant.
