The hanging light … Read more This large mid-century modern Space Age Sputnik chandelier was produced by Szarvasi in Hungary during the 1970s. The hanging light features an off-white enameled metal central column with two radiating tiers of arms, 10 spherical opal acrylic globes and contrasting brass fittings and conical globe holders. The arrangement of clustered globes creates a distinctive sculptural profile, while the opaque acrylic produces a warm diffused glow when illuminated. The pendant features multiple lighting configurations allowing groups of bulbs to be illuminated separately. A striking statement light perfect for installation over a dining table, kitchen island or in an entryway or living space. The chandelier lamp uses ten readily available standard candelabra-base bulbs; bulbs shown are included. The lamp has been professionally rewired for American voltage and retains its brass suspension rod and cylindrical ceiling canopy cover.

Szarvasi Vas- és Fémipari began lighting production in Szarvas, Hungary in 1970, followed by the construction of a dedicated lamp factory in 1972. During the 1970s, lighting and small household appliances became an important part of the company’s production, with Szarvasi lighting distributed throughout Hungary and exported internationally. The company’s lighting from this period reflects the futuristic forms and experimental use of materials characteristic of Eastern European Space Age design.

CONDITION
Excellent vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use including minor surface marks and scuffs. Professionally rewired for American voltage and in good working condition. Direct-wire. Bulbs included. Brand sticker on interior of canopy cup.
