An elegant mid-20th-century Louis XV–style armchair by John Widdicomb Co. of Grand Rapids, Michigan, retaining its original manufacturer’s identification.
The sculptural ebonized wood frame is highlighted with parcel-gilt detailing and features a shaped crest centered by a carved gilt ornament, graceful cabriole legs, scrolling arms and a beautifully shaped apron.
A woven black cane back provides an airy counterpoint to the substantial frame, while the seat and armrests are upholstered in rich oxblood/burgundy leather and finished with traditional brass nailhead trim.
The combination of black ebonized wood, gilt accents and deep burgundy leather gives the chair a particularly striking Hollywood Regency quality while retaining the classical proportions and curves associated with Louis XV furniture.
The chair retains its original John Widdicomb Co. “Makers of Fine Furniture – Grand Rapids” brass plaque, as well as its original factory/upholstery label identifying John Widdicomb Co., Grand Rapids, Michigan.
