The work depicts two traditional sailing vessels moving across open water, with a maritime navigation or fishing marker positioned in the foreground.
Executed in a rich, subdued palette of deep navy, charcoal, rust, ochre and cream, the painting features expressive brushwork throughout the water and sails. Highlights across the waves create a wonderful sense of movement and reflected light, while the warm reddish-brown sails provide a dramatic contrast against the cool sea and sky.
The painting is housed in an especially attractive wide vintage wood frame with an aged ivory and gold crackle finish. The naturally distressed surface and extensive craquelure give the frame considerable character and complement the painting beautifully.
