Deep burgundy, crimson, blush … Read more The composition features a lush arrangement of chrysanthemums and dahlia-like blossoms overflowing from a classical vessel. Deep burgundy, crimson, blush pink and ivory flowers emerge dramatically against a rich green background. Expressive, confident brushwork and areas of dimensional impasto give the blossoms wonderful texture and movement.
The painting is signed E.A. Cox at lower right. The signature is consistent in name and format with that used by British painter and illustrator Elijah Albert Cox (1876–1955); however, the work has not been formally authenticated and is therefore being offered as signed E.A. Cox, artist attribution unconfirmed.
The reverse reveals an older keyed wooden stretcher and aged canvas consistent with the painting’s period appearance. The substantial decorative frame has a warm gilt finish, carved/molded ornament and contrasting inner liner. The wooden frame structure is repeatedly marked “MADE IN SWEDEN.” See less
