An exceptional vintage hand-engraved silver decorative box attributed to Persian silverwork of the late Pahlavi era, circa late 1960s to 1970s. The box is richly decorated with traditional hand-worked engraving, giving the surface remarkable texture, depth, and visual detail.
The underside bears several important hallmarks, including the number “84,” a lion holding a curved sword, and additional Persian/Farsi marks. The 84 mark found on Persian silver is traditionally associated with approximately .875 silver fineness. The lion-with-sword emblem is also associated with Iranian silver of the Pahlavi period. The additional script appears to represent Persian maker, retailer, or assay marks; the individual silversmith has not been conclusively identified.
The box weighs approximately 262 grams, giving it a substantial feel for its size. Rather than being silver plate, the hallmarks are consistent with high-grade solid silver construction.
The exterior displays elaborate Persian-style engraving across the surface, characteristic of the highly detailed metalworking traditions associated with Iranian and Persian decorative arts. The workmanship transforms what was originally a functional box into a striking decorative object.
Boxes of this type were traditionally used as cigarette boxes, keepsake boxes, small jewelry boxes, or presentation objects. Today it would make an exceptional addition to a collection of Persian silver, Middle Eastern decorative arts, antique silver, or hand-engraved metalwork. It also displays beautifully on a desk, library table, bar, console, or collected tabletop.
The box remains in good vintage condition with age-appropriate surface wear, light scratches, oxidation, and natural silver patina consistent with its age and previous use. The patina has been retained rather than aggressively polished in order to preserve the engraved detail and character of the silver. Please refer closely to the photographs, including the detailed photographs of the hallmarks.
The piece is being offered as an attributed late-Pahlavi-era Persian silver object based upon its decorative style and hallmarks. No specific silversmith attribution is being made because the maker’s mark has not been conclusively identified.
Approximately 262 grams.
