An exceptionally atmospheric and highly collectible pair of vintage Italian Neoclassical column table lamps, rendered as ancient Roman temple columns, with sublime time-worn patina.
Each lamp is architecturally correct and powerfully sculptural: a tall, fluted Corinthian column with deep vertical reeding, rising from a stepped square plinth base with recessed diamond cartouches, and crowned with a finely carved double acanthus capital. The proportions are elegant, tall, and slender - the classic Grand Tour candlestick form.
The finish is what elevates this pair into the extraordinary, as perfectly documented in your macro photos. It is a masterful, heavily distressed faux excavation finish: layers upon layers of antique white, ochre, raw sienna, charcoal, and burnished gold leaf, with intentional and age-induced cracking, chipping, flaking, and pitting that reveals centuries of history beneath. Each flute shows rub-through, craquelure, and granular texture as if unearthed from a Roman villa. The base with its diamond inlay shows even more depth - white gesso, grey, and gilt all colliding. This is not damage; this is the highly prized "frescoed ruin" patina that interior designers pay thousands for.
Fitted with a realistic faux beeswax candle sleeve with drips, brass harp, and in-line cord switches. The wiring is recent and in perfect working condition.
The lamps are crowned with custom painted parchment shades in a rich, lacquered mustard / ochre / tobacco ground. The shades are couture: trimmed with burgundy at top and bottom, a slate-blue band, and a central hand-painted scrolling acanthus frieze in antiqued bronze-gilt with crackle, as seen in your close-up. The interior is gold. When lit, they cast an incredibly warm, amber, library glow that contrasts beautifully with the pale, ghostly column below.
