19th century Hungarian flat top trunk crafted in pine with original hand painted decoration. The surface features a blue background … Read more 19th century Hungarian flat top trunk crafted in pine with original hand painted decoration. The surface features a blue background with carved and painted floral motifs in red, yellow and white.
Carved half column details flank the front. A unique feature is the lower drawer, which opens with two brass ring pulls.
The trunk top opens on wrought iron hinges, revealing an interior compartment with a small lidded box to the left for storage of personal items. Side handles allow for easier transportation.
A wax finish has been applied to both the interior and exterior. The trunk has been restored and is strong, stable, and ready to use. No lock nor key.
The generations of use are seen in the many cracks, nicks, gouges, old repairs (see addition of metal reinforcement at sides and back), wear to paint and distress to pine.
The lower drawer interior shows age-related separation, cracks, and staining. The top shows long crack, old stains, gouges/nicks etc. The wear and distress seen throughout reflects generations of use and contributes to the character of this example of European folk art craftsmanship.
