About This Piece:
A poster after Leopoldo Metlicovitz's celebrated Grande Stagione San Pellegrino design — an emblem of Italian Liberty graphics and of the Belle Époque spa culture that once drew Europe's fashionable classes to the valleys above Bergamo. A sinuous female figure gathers water in a shallow bowl, wreathed in climbing ivy, with the Casinò Municipale of San Pellegrino Terme rising behind her. The lettering announces the great season, May to October. This is a later printing, produced in the 1970s.
Metlicovitz (1868–1944) was born in Trieste and arrived in Milan in 1891 as a trainee lithographer at the Officine Grafiche Ricordi, where he was promoted to technical director within a year. Working alongside Hohenstein, Dudovich and Cappiello, he became one of the defining figures of Italian poster art — designing the posters for Puccini's Tosca, Madama Butterfly and Turandot, and winning the competition for the official poster of the 1906 Milan Universal Exhibition.
