THE ARTIST: André Gisson (1921–2003) was the professional pseudonym of the New York-born artist Anders Gittelson. He adopted a French-sounding name early in his career to align his work with the prestige of classic French Impressionism. He studied at the renowned Pratt Institute in New York and spent extensive time living and painting throughout Europe.

THE ARTWORK: Two young girls are seated among a lush, sun-dappled meadow or garden vibrant with wildflowers. This is Gisson's signature theme. In this work the artist highlights the white fabric of their clothing to capture the effects of shimmering midday sunlight cutting through deep garden shade. He utilizes broken, flickering strokes to blend light and color, directly drawing inspiration from classic masters like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

The painting’s back shows a standard mid-to-late 20th-century linen-weave canvas mounted tightly onto a professional wooden expansion stretcher.
