This piece is an original, handmade folk art face jug created by the contemporary Georgia potter and educator Stephen Hawks.
Artwork Details Artist: Stephen Hawks (MFA), an independent Southern artist and poet who served for 19 years as the Resident Potter at the Westville Living History Museum.Material & Technique: This wheel-thrown ceramic vessel uses an ash or alkaline-based reduction glaze to create its signature metallic grey-green surface, featuring distinct gloss pooling over the expressive facial features.Inscription: The quote you referenced—"I come from a long line of a long line..."—is an example of the personalized, poetic inscriptions or personal histories that Hawks frequently incises onto his folk art vessels.
About the Artist & His Work Stephen Hawks creates his functional and sculptural pottery using local Georgia clays and traditional woodfire firing techniques. His artistry draws heavily from deep historical traditions, Southern folk culture, and his own background in poetry, philosophy, and spirituality. His work is frequently showcased at regional hubs like the Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia and the Ology Gallery.
