A rare decorative antique expandable library book rack dating to approximately the turn of the 20th century.
Constructed over a wooden sliding framework, the piece is richly clad in aged brass or brass-toned metalwork with intricate punched geometric ornamentation. Each hinged upright terminates in an impressive embossed imperial eagle with spread wings, shield, orb and staff.
The ingenious telescoping base expands to accommodate a changing collection of books, while the ends fold flat when not in use.
Beautifully preserved patina and more than a century of gentle wear give the metalwork tremendous character. Equally compelling as a functional book rack or sculptural object on a desk, console or library shelf.
