ABOUT THE ARTIST
Vincent A. Walker was a Jamaican-born artist, illustrator, writer and longtime Poughkeepsie resident. His work is documented by the Poughkeepsie Public Library District, which notes that Walker was active in the local art community and worked alongside Poughkeepsie artist Thomas Barrett.
Walker was also an accomplished illustrator. In 1930 he won art-design contests for book jackets, including the striking cover he designed for Leslie McFarlane’s mystery novel “Streets of Shadow.” He also participated in the important 1934 art exhibition at Luckey Platt’s department store in Poughkeepsie. His work and correspondence are represented in local historical collections.
This painting offers a particularly interesting glimpse into Walker’s work as a mid-century painter, separate from his better-documented illustration work of the 1930s.
