A foundry mold is a reusable wooden pattern used to create sand molds for casting metal parts. In this case, it was used to make a bearing cap—a component that bolts over a bearing to hold a rotating shaft securely in place in machinery such as engines, pumps, or industrial equipment.

The pattern would be pressed into packed sand to form a cavity, molten metal would be poured into that cavity, and after cooling the finished bearing cap would be machined and installed on the machine.

The Yuba Manufacturing Company, 1898-1957, was based in Marrysville, CA, across the Yuba River from Yuba City. Its highly-regarded dredges were used in California as well as for gold mining in Alaska.

A great piece of history that also makes for a striking piece of industrial decor.
