Elegant Spanish secrétaire/chest, in the Isabelino (Elizabethan) style, probably dating to the 1920s–1930s. This distinctive piece combines a compact chest of drawers with a convenient drop-front writing desk.
The serpentine-front case has beautifully figured wood, decorative floral and geometric marquetry/inlay, and original-looking brass hardware. The upper drawer/front folds down to create a writing surface and opens to reveal a fitted interior with six small drawers, providing useful storage for papers and personal items.
The construction is traditional and substantial, with a solid framed wooden back and carefully executed veneer and inlay work, which gives it the appearance of a quality Spanish revival piece rather than a mass-produced reproduction. It has been well cared for and is in good vintage condition, with some appropriate age-related wear, scratches and finish variation consistent with its age, but no significant structural problems are apparent.
This is an attractive and useful example of early-20th-century Spanish furniture inspired by the Isabelino (Isabelline) style, and would make an especially distinctive piece for a study, library, bedroom, or entry.
