This vintage rug was hand-knotted in wool by artisan weavers working in the Afghan Ersari tribal tradition.
Measuring 8'4" x 11'7" (255 x 352 cm), the rust-toned field is divided into eight octagonal medallions, each centered on a single stylized bird gul woven in sky blue.
The medallions are framed by a pavilion-motif guard border in maroon and cream, a narrow blue meander band, and an outer border of small polychrome animal figures set on a sage green ground. Both ends finish in a flatwoven striped kilim skirt with long ivory fringe.
The wool has a soft, slightly lustrous hand, and the piece is in good, presentable condition with the honest character of a hand-knotted tribal rug. A substantial rug suited to a living room, dining room, or large hallway.
