24-piece set includes:

• 6 teacups
• 6 saucers
• 6 dessert plates
• 1 teapot with removable lid + 1 lid
• 1 sugar bowl with removable lid + 1 lid
• 1 cream pitcher with removable lid + 1 lid

The set is decorated with detailed traditional Japanese figural scenes featuring haloed immortals/religious figures, dragons, patterned robes, stylized waves and clouds, deep black grounds, red and white accents, and extensive gold detailing. The teapot, sugar bowl and cream pitcher each have a fitted lid topped with a large three-dimensional hand-painted dragon finial. Each dragon has a dramatic open mouth with individually modeled teeth and an exposed red tongue. The lids are richly decorated with intricate black-and-gold geometric patterns.

The teapot is particularly striking, with a large sculptural gilt dragon wrapping around the body and an elongated dragon-form spout with an open mouth. The dragon decoration continues across the serving pieces and gives the set an exceptional sculptural quality.

The six teacup interiors feature two hand-painted figural portraits, visible when looking into the cup. These are painted decorations on the interior of the cups rather than lithophanes. The six matching dessert plates are especially impressive display pieces, featuring large and highly detailed figural compositions with richly patterned robes, dragons and extensive gold decoration.

Several pieces are marked “MADE IN JAPAN” along with a rectangular red/brown and gold Japanese character mark. The combination of extensive hand-painted decoration, abundant gilding, dimensional dragons, sculptural open-mouth dragon finials, painted figures inside the cups and large figural scenes makes this an exceptional display set for a collector of Japanese ceramics, Satsuma-style ware, Dragonware or Asian decorative arts.

CONDITION:

Excellent overall vintage condition, considering the age and elaborate nature of the decoration.

The teapot, sugar bowl and cream pitcher retain their lids and dragon finials-with no notable gold loss around the rims of the lids. The dragon finials retain their three-dimensional open mouths, exposed teeth and painted red tongues.

One dessert plate has been cracked and repaired. There are one or two small, localized spots/areas on a few of the pieces, along with minor age-related surface wear consistent with vintage hand-decorated ceramics. Age-related crazing can be seen in some of the glazed areas.

Aside from the repaired dessert plate and minor localized imperfections noted above, the entire set is in excellent overall condition and displays beautifully.
