A handsome and substantial vintage Swaine & Adeney English leather Gladstone travel bag, beautifully crafted in rich cognac-brown leather and retaining its original maker's markings, Royal Warrant label, matching Swaine Adeney leather identification holder, and both keys.
Founded in England in the 18th century, Swaine & Adeney became renowned for exceptionally fine leather goods, luggage, equestrian accessories, and travel pieces. The firm's long association with the British Royal Family is reflected in the original interior leather label on this bag, embossed beneath the Prince of Wales feathers:

A second original leather accessory found within an interior pocket is embossed with the Swaine Adeney name and traditional equestrian gentleman-and-whip emblem, providing further confirmation of the bag's maker.

Design & Construction
Measuring an impressive 22 inches wide, this is a large and beautifully proportioned example of the traditional English Gladstone travel bag.
The substantial structured body is constructed from cognac and russet-brown leather that has developed a wonderfully warm, naturally aged patina through decades of use. The traditional rigid framed opening allows the bag to open widely for convenient access to the interior while giving it the distinctive architectural silhouette associated with classic Gladstone luggage.
The upper frame is fitted with substantial brass-toned clasps and locking hardware. Both clasps engage properly, and when deliberately closed, the two halves of the frame meet evenly without a significant gap. Both keys are present.Two long adjustable leather straps extend over the body and secure through substantial metal buckles, providing additional security while contributing considerably to the bag's handsome traditional appearance.
Sturdy rolled leather carrying handles, reinforced corners, carefully stitched structural elements, and substantial hardware demonstrate the quality of manufacture for which Swaine & Adeney became known.

Very good vintage condition with an exceptionally attractive naturally developed patina.
The bag has been carefully inspected. The framed opening closes properly and evenly, both brass clasps engage and function correctly, and both keys are included. The bottom remains in very good condition.
As expected with a genuine vintage leather travel piece, the exterior displays surface scuffs, scratches, creasing, rubbing, tonal variation, and other evidence of previous use. These characteristics are consistent with age and contribute to the depth and character of the cognac leather rather than detracting from its appearance.
The handles, exterior straps, buckles, and principal structural components appear sound.
