A small bird perched at the edge of the composition and a glimpse of landscape beyond add unusual narrative detail to the traditional still-life setting.

Rendered in a rich, atmospheric Old World palette of deep burgundy, forest green, ochre and wine tones, the painting has wonderful scale and decorative presence. The dramatic contrast between the dark interior and softly illuminated landscape gives the composition considerable depth.
