Striking large-scale European society portrait depicting an elegantly dressed woman in evening attire, signed “Baron Th. Meyendorff” at lower right and dated 17/VIII/38 (August 17, 1938).
Executed in oil on stretched canvas, the portrait captures the sophistication of late-1930s society portraiture. The sitter is depicted in a pale evening gown embellished with a colorful floral detail, layered pearl necklaces, bracelets and rings. Her carefully styled hair, jewelry and poised stance beautifully reflect the fashion and glamour of the period.
The painting exhibits wonderful visible brushwork and texture throughout, particularly in the dark atmospheric background, gown, jewelry and beautifully rendered hands.
The signature appears consistent with the name of Baron Theophile (Bogdan Theophil) von Meyendorff (1886–1971), a Russian-German/Baltic German portrait artist and miniaturist whose works have appeared at international auction. This attribution has not been independently authenticated, and the painting is therefore offered as signed Baron Th. Meyendorff, rather than with a definitive attribution.
The canvas remains mounted on its substantial original-style wooden stretcher and is presently unframed.
Condition:
Good antique/vintage condition consistent with age. The painting retains visible age-related surface character, including craquelure, surface dust/soiling and areas of wear. Canvas and stretcher show age consistent with a work dating to 1938. The painting has not been professionally cleaned or restored while in our possession. Please review all photographs carefully, including detailed images of the painted surface, signature and reverse, as they form part of the condition description.
A dramatic and sophisticated period portrait with wonderful scale, character and provenance-worthy intrigue — equally compelling in a traditional interior or juxtaposed against modern furnishings.
