The paired birds, depicted with wings dramatically outstretched, form an expressive crest above the restrained Neoclassical lines of the mirror.
Lovebirds and doves were favored romantic motifs in the decorative vocabulary associated with Louis XVI, symbolizing love, fidelity and devotion. Here they are joined by a flaming torch and quiver of arrows, attributes traditionally associated with Cupid, creating a wonderfully symbolic composition devoted to love and affection. Laurel branches extend across the crest and soften the architecture of the gently rounded frame, while a delicate beaded border outlines the mirror plate.
The frame retains its warm, naturally aged gilding, enriched by fine incised and etched decoration visible across the gilt surface. This particular treatment became fashionable during the mid-19th century transition from the restrained Louis Philippe period toward the more decorative Napoleon III era. French craftsmen of this period frequently revisited the celebrated styles of the 18th century, and the Louis XVI influence here remains unmistakable in the symmetry, pearl beading, classical foliage and romantic iconography.
