Atmospheric 1994 fine-art photograph titled “Medusa” by Seattle photographer Shelly Corbett, presented in a striking handmade metal frame.
The dreamlike figurative composition depicts intertwined female figures rendered in soft, ethereal tones of violet, rose, blue and ivory. Corbett’s intentionally diffused treatment of the human form gives the photograph an almost painterly quality, recalling classical and Renaissance imagery while maintaining a distinctly contemporary photographic sensibility.
Signed Shelly Corbett in pencil beneath the image. The original artist’s label on the reverse identifies the work as “Medusa,” 1994, and appears to number the photograph #6 from an edition of 10.
Corbett is a Seattle-based fine-art photographer whose work has been exhibited extensively in the United States and Mexico. Her early photographic practice concentrated heavily on the human figure, intimacy, water, light and voyeuristic imagery.
The presentation is particularly noteworthy. The photograph is surrounded by a generous white mat and housed behind glass in a substantial handmade metal frame with exposed fasteners and naturally aged surfaces. The industrial frame provides an excellent contrast to the soft, romantic quality of the photograph.
