An original hand-pulled lithograph by Janet Turner (1914–1988), master printmaker, naturalist, and Guggenheim Fellow.
Turner was born in Missouri — in an era when women didn't routinely go to universities, she went to Stanford. The university dropped her biology program in her junior year, so she shifted to Far Eastern history. A trip to the Orient after graduation sparked an interest in printmaking, and she returned to study painting under Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute. She earned a PhD from Columbia, won two Guggenheim Fellowships, and built the printmaking program at California State University Chico from the ground up. She was influential. They named their art museum after her.
