British Sporting School, Circa 1990 – The Huntsman on a Bay Hunter – Equestrian Watercolor
Description
An evocative late-20th-century British sporting watercolour depicting a huntsman mounted upon a powerful bay hunter, riding through open countryside.
Dating to circa 1990, the work continues the long tradition of British equestrian and sporting art while possessing the freshness and immediacy of an observational study. The huntsman is shown in traditional attire, wearing a vivid scarlet hunting coat, pale breeches, dark riding cap and tall boots.
The bay hunter is captured in animated forward movement, its raised legs, substantial body and flowing tail lending energy to the composition. Loose, transparent washes are combined with darker, more concentrated strokes to articulate the horse’s musculature, head, bridle, reins and tack.
The rider’s scarlet coat provides the principal colour accent against an atmospheric landscape of muted greens, browns, greys and blue washes. Broadly handled countryside and a softly suggested horizon allow the mounted figure to remain the clear focus of the composition.
Unlike expansive traditional hunting scenes populated by numerous riders and hounds, this work concentrates upon the relationship between a single huntsman and his horse. The simplicity of the composition gives the painting an intimate and characterful quality particularly suited to traditional, country house, equestrian and English-inspired interiors.
Presented mounted and glazed within a quality modern **Larson-Juhl frame**, the watercolour is ready for display.

The Artist
The identity of the artist has not presently been established, and no visible signature has been located.
The confident observation of the horse, traditional hunting costume and expressive watercolour technique place the work within the modern continuation of the British sporting-school tradition.
Its intimate scale and spontaneous handling suggest that it may have originated as an observational sporting study rather than a formal commissioned equestrian portrait.
Further examination outside the present mount could potentially reveal a concealed signature, inscription, watermark or other identifying evidence. Until such evidence emerges, the work is conservatively catalogued as British Sporting School, circa 1990.
