Executed in oil on canvas, the painting has wonderful depth and texture, with expressive, heavily worked brushstrokes and areas of pronounced impasto that give the landscape an almost tactile quality. The subdued greens, ochres, blues, and earth tones are particularly beautiful and lend the work the atmospheric character associated with early-20th-century European landscape painting.

The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner; the signature is present but has not been definitively identified.

Presented in its substantial period carved wood frame with decorative relief detailing. The reverse reveals an older wooden stretcher and construction consistent with the painting’s age.

At approximately 53 1/2 inches wide by 40 inches high framed, this is an impressive statement-size work with wonderful presence. Its pastoral subject and beautifully aged palette would work equally well in a traditional European interior or as a soulful counterpoint in a more modern setting. See less
