The substantial brass and paktong pipe is quite heavy and features vibrant cloisonné floral decoration set against a black ground. Each cloisonné panel is framed in blue enamel, creating a striking contrast with the colorful flowers. A Double Happiness (囍) pendant hangs from a cord near the mouth, while another cord is decorated with two small brushes.

The flat base is unmarked.

Adding to the character and history of this unusual piece is an etched inscription on the lid of the water chamber reading “Florry to John.” The interior of the lid is decorated with a Chinese poem accompanied by a charming bird-and-flower motif. These personal inscriptions and decorative details give the pipe a sense of history and suggest it may have been presented as a keepsake or gift.

4 ¾ in long x 1 3/8 in wide x 11 in tall. Weighs 15.5 oz.

CONDITION
Most of the sides have some losses to the cloisonne enamels. The brass has taken on a dark patina finish from age and use. The pipe to the mouth has abrasions and the lip of one of the holes used to store either the brush or tweezers is bent. There is a small amount of verdigris on the base. The pipe has definitely been used and it wasn’t just a tourist piece used for display .

A remarkably complete example of an antique Chinese cloisonné pipe, with its colorful decoration, original fittings, and personal inscriptions making it an especially interesting addition to a collection of Chinese export wares, smoking accessories, or cloisonné objects. See less
