This is a sturdy, well built piece with just enough wear around the edges to give it a warm rustic look. There was no date to be found beyond the patent date of 1894 on the "Victor" caster wheels, so there is no way of knowing exactly when it was made. When we received it, the finish was scraped up so the entire exterior, save for the bottom, was re-stained, and the handles were painted. Top to bottom details: The top surface shows wear, and there is a slight crack; otherwise, it is fine. The hinges are in nice physical condition and function as they should with no squeaking or looseness. One of the fabric lid supports is in good shape, and the other was removed as it was almost completely torn. This side is also missing one of the decorative tacks that connects the support piece. The interior of the trunk did not give off any cedar aroma after all these years, so the underside of the lid, along with the rest of the interior, was treated with boiled linseed oil to preserve it. To get the cedar smell back, it would have to be lightly sanded, exposing new wood. The underside is good overall with no damage or wear. The inside of the trunk is also fine. There are no cracks or other damage present on the back, front, sides, or bottom, and it looks about as it should. The exterior of the piece is all in very good condition with only relatively light wear and no damage. The underside is damage free and the casters swivel and spin as they should. Please see the pictures for further details.
