An extremely fine, hand-carved figure of the Hindu goddess Kali, depicted in her iconic stance standing upon the reclining figure of Shiva. Rich in symbolism and finely rendered detail, the sculpture captures Kali as a powerful embodiment of Shakti—the divine feminine energy associated with protection and liberation. Kali is portrayed with multiple arms carrying symbolic attributes, including a severed head, representing the destruction of ego and ignorance. One hand extends outward in a protective gesture, revealing the dual nature of the goddess: formidable in her destruction of evil yet benevolent toward her devotees. She is elaborately adorned with necklaces, bracelets, anklets and a beautifully carved skirt, while the refined treatment of her face and body gives this representation a dignified presence. The entire statue is finely carved with attention paid to every detail.
Beneath Kali lies Shiva, her divine consort. According to Hindu tradition, Shiva placed himself beneath Kali during her powerful dance, bringing her destructive momentum to an end. On a deeper philosophical level, the imagery represents the inseparable relationship between Shakti, or dynamic divine energy, and Shiva, pure consciousness.
The figures are framed within an architectural, shrine-like backplate and rest upon a finely carved lotus-form base, creating a complete sculptural tableau. The warm, naturally variegated stone and polished surface beautifully accentuate the intricate carving and dimensional details.
Both spiritually significant and highly decorative, this sculptural representation of Kali and Shiva is a compelling example of traditional Indian sacred imagery and makes a distinctive addition to a collection of Asian art, Hindu sculpture, or devotional objects.
