Exceptional French Modernist highly polished metal ceiling fixture, designed in the streamlined Art Deco / Machine Age aesthetic of the … Read more Exceptional French Modernist highly polished metal ceiling fixture, designed in the streamlined Art Deco / Machine Age aesthetic of the 1930s, with an architectural, geometric form, attributed to Atelier Petitot. The fixture features a very shiny polished nickel-plated rectangular body with softly rounded ends and strongly articulated triple-band detailing. Any apparent variation in coloration in the photographs is due to reflections of the surrounding environment on the highly polished, reflective surface of the fixture, rather than an actual variation in the finish.
The mirror finish metal lower framework incorporates numerous individual glass-rod inserts, creating a distinctive ribbed effect while adding texture and light. The rounded “bullnose” border surrounding the fixture is fitted with additional glass rods set within vertical slots, producing a particularly elegant architectural effect as the light filters through the glass.
The fixture is suspended from a central trumpet-form nickel canopy and single rod stem, which complements the streamlined geometry of the body. The combination of highly polished nickel, curved geometric surfaces, and ribbed appearing glass is particularly characteristic of the sophisticated French Modernist vocabulary of the period.
A striking and unusually well-designed example of French Art Deco / Modernist lighting, with the presence of a traditional billiard or pool-table fixture but executed with a much more refined, architectural and Industrial sensibility.
