Striking vintage Mexican folk art pottery vase featuring an elaborate hand-painted design in muted gray, black, cream, and warm terracotta tones.
This substantial vessel has a beautifully sculptural form with a rounded body, tall flared neck, pedestal-style foot, and two applied loop handles. The decoration extends around the entire vessel and incorporates charming hand-painted rabbits among stylized foliage, a large floral motif, geometric borders, and finely executed crosshatched detailing.
The combination of animal, botanical, and geometric motifs is reminiscent of traditional pottery associated with the Tonalá region of Jalisco, Mexico. The piece is unsigned, however, so the precise maker and place of manufacture cannot be confirmed.
Particularly appealing is the continuous decoration: rotating the vase reveals distinctly different compositions, allowing it to be displayed from several attractive angles.
The interior is finished in a warm terracotta color, while the underside of the foot remains unglazed, revealing the natural pottery body.
At approximately 12.5 inches tall and weighing 5 pounds, this is a substantial decorative vessel with considerable presence. An expressive piece of Mexican-inspired folk art pottery for a Southwestern, Spanish Colonial, Hacienda, Rustic, Bohemian, or eclectic interior.
