A unique terracotta figure depicting a porter or laborer carrying a large bundle, created in the tradition of 19th-century genre sculpture.
The figure depicts a standing man wearing a head covering and work clothes, holding a large bundle in front of him. The figure is rendered in a naturalistic style, with clearly defined details of the face, hands, clothing, and the load.
The object is made of ceramic/terracotta in a characteristic brick-red color. The sculpture is spatially rendered, including an integral base. On the underside, two production holes are visible, created during the manufacturing and firing processes.
A comparison with museum and auction items points to the 19th-century tradition of depicting people engaged in trades and manual labor. Of particular interest are the parallels to 19th-century Indian genre figurines, including those of porters from the Krishnanagar center. However, there is no basis for unequivocally attributing the object to a specific artist.
Artist unknown.
The origin remains undetermined. The form and subject matter suggest a possible Indian origin, though a European terracotta tradition cannot be ruled out.
This is an interesting piece for collectors of 19th-century ceramics, genre sculpture, folk art, and depictions of trades.
The figure is preserved in its original condition, with visible signs of age and handcrafted workmanship. The surface exhibits natural wear, minor chips, and irregularities characteristic of old terracotta. It has not undergone modern reconstruction or excessive restoration.
A collector’s item. The date and origin have been determined based on stylistic and technical characteristics; the lack of a signature or documented provenance makes it impossible to definitively attribute authorship.
