Expertly executed … Read more A pair of handcrafted Murano glass candlesticks by Gabbiani, created in Murano, Italy during the late 20th century. Expertly executed in opaline and clear glass enriched with gold polveri, each candlestick is modelled as a finely detailed ear of corn, demonstrating the furnace's celebrated mastery of naturalistic sculptural forms. The central corn cobs are rendered in warm opaline glass infused with shimmering gold polveri, while the surrounding husks are formed in clear textured glass, creating a striking contrast of transparency and luminosity. The exceptional modelling captures the layered texture and organic movement of the leaves, reflecting the technical virtuosity for which Murano glassmakers are renowned. Each candlestick rises from a broad circular pedestal base supporting a wide drip tray and flared tubular candle socket. Signed to the edge of each base, the pair exhibits the subtle variations expected of individually handcrafted works, with a slight difference in height that further emphasises their artisanal production. The Gabbiani furnace became known during the latter half of the twentieth century for producing highly decorative sculptural glass, frequently drawing inspiration from flora, fruit and other natural forms. Their work combines traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques with expressive modelling and richly textured surfaces, making pieces such as these instantly recognisable examples of late twentieth-century Murano craftsmanship. Presented in very good vintage condition with only light age-related wear consistent with careful use.
