The curved edges of the shelves and the slender baluster columns create a light, clearly structured piece of furniture with calm vertical proportions. Historical context: Etageres—also known as whatnots—were standard furnishings in bourgeois parlors and living rooms during the 19th century. They served for the open display of porcelain, books, knick-knacks, and mementos, reflecting the growing desire of the middle class to display their possessions visibly and in an organized manner. Their light, open construction allowed for flexible placement within the room; casters were common for moving the piece as needed. Features – Three curved, cut-out shelves with serpentine front edges – Original casters with porcelain wheels. Design: The tiered serving stand follows the design language of the Louis Philippe style: flowing, curved shelf contours combine with finely profiled, turned baluster-shaped columns. The construction is open and vertically oriented; the turned finials emphasize the clear structure. Ornamentation is created exclusively through the turning work, not through applied decoration. Dimensions: Height 87 × Width 54 × Depth 33 cm. Clearance between shelves: approx. 33 cm. Material and condition: Mahogany. Well preserved with age-related wear; the surfaces show a calm, natural patina. Inspected and cleaned by a castle caretaker, completely ready for use. Casters are functional. See less
