This beautifully crafted nine-sided (nonagonal) plate features a richly painted Japanese garden scene against a striking cobalt-blue ground. The central composition depicts flowering branches with birds, butterflies and colorful fruits, surrounded by an elaborate border of flowers, foliage and fruit. The combination of deep indigo blue with vivid red, green, yellow and purple enamels creates a particularly vibrant and sophisticated decorative effect. The decoration demonstrates the characteristic Japanese technique of combining underglaze indigo-blue decoration with finely painted polychrome overglaze enamels. The painting is highly detailed, with delicate botanical and animal motifs throughout, giving the plate both an elegant and distinctly Japanese character. The reverse is finished in white porcelain with a finely radiating, fan-like impressed design, centered by the Kozangama Maebata maker's mark in blue. The unusual nine-sided form further enhances the sculptural quality of the piece. Kozangama (Kozan Kiln) was a pottery line produced by Maebata, a company based in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, an important center of Mino ware production and distribution. Maebata was established in 1946 and became known for producing high-quality Japanese porcelain and ceramic tableware incorporating traditional Mino craftsmanship with decorative designs suited to modern interiors.
